“I had a teacher who said that in every actor there is a Narcissus and a mask. An actor lives in the middle of those two forces.”

While making the call sheet for the photos of our March cover story starring the three actors of ROMA, I decided to interview Marina de Tavira. Since everyone turned their eyes towards them, I have followed Marina’s behavior in interviews, on TV shows, on red carpets, and she is one of the people that intrigues me the most. I understand and I am very moved by the journey of Yalitza and her sudden jump to fame, but Marina – who has been acting for twenty years – is a more subtle presence: she serves as a perfect complement, and as a translator and as a support. On many occasions he does the work of editor of the words of Yalitza and at the same time she is enjoying her own journey. I tried to get to know her a little more through a conversation that, like most of my conversations, started with clothes.

“In my theater career, I’ve worn so many things. Clothes change your attitude, and I always build my characters through shoes. I always want to have the character’s shoes from very early on in the rehearsals because that determines how they step into the world.” Shortly before telling me this, Marina modeled some clothes she would never wear in her everyday life, and she looked surprisingly comfortable, as if he were also acting during the photo shoots or red carpets related to the promotion of her movie.
“In public appearances I always wear high heels! They give me a sense of security. There is a discussion of whether women should get off their heels, but I like them a lot.” It’s not a self-esteem issue – anyone would need a little extra security if they were at the same events as Jennifer Lopez and Charlize Theron. “There are women who have been walking red carpets for years, but I had done very little here in Mexico. I did not enjoy them before, but I already learned to enjoy it now. “
“What I like is to make characters, and when I act, the focus is not on who I am as a person, but on the character I am playing. In the photos and the red carpet the focus is on Marina. Although I understood that the stylist’s work is also a big part of that presence, and that’s why I learned to enjoy it. “
I have noticed that many celebrities are rather private and prefer not to be in the spotlight in real life.
“I think it’s because I’m shy. There are many actors who are very shy. That has nothing to do with standing on a stage and being able to make a character, because there you are embracing a situation and you are saying ‘Look at me, but this is no the real me’. Any actor is saying that they like to be seen, but at the same time hide their reality behind another. “
While portraying these characters, Marina de Tavira tries to generate a transcendent discourse with what she does.
“Especially with the role of Sofia in ROMA, I have been interested in talking a lot about women who have to face motherhood alone because it is something very common, which we take for granted. Absent men are forgiven very easily, but a woman can’t do it because it is a tremendous social condemnation. For many generations we have taken for granted the work of women as mothers and as cleaning ladies. It has always been seen as much lesser job than writing a book, than going to the office, than being an entrepreneur. It is not a minor task to raise children, nor the daily routine of simple tasks. What I like is that this movie makes them epic.”

This film, which will surely be remembered as one of the most important works of Mexican cinema, has given Marina de Tavira an international fame with a reach that she had not had before. And the issue of fame has always interested me a lot, because I think you are more prepared for it later in your life, especially because you are more aware that it is an ephemeral phenomenon. What would be the difference if this global attention had come to Marina before – in her first performances?
“I do not know, I find it hard to put myself on that scenario. Maybe it would have opened doors to other projects, but it would also have been more destabilizing because I really do not feel that my life is changing right now. In reality, it will remain the same, maybe with possibilities of projects in other countries, but also maybe not and I do not care much. I already enjoy what I do. “
That’s why I wanted to interview her, because I think we think alike. There are many people who come to me to ask for advice on how to start their social media: not because of a need to have a platform to express their personal point of view, but because they want to get clothes and travels for free.
“When students start studying acting, you have to ask yourself, what do you want to be: actor or celebrity? You can be famous in other ways, and more quickly. For example now with social media, that is very evident. Also, it is 100% fleeting, more now with all the information that is constantly moving. It would be ridiculous to think that something like this is permanent. “
What will not be fleeting will be Marina’s career, who is aware of the platform that ROMA has given her and will use it in the best possible way. Soon he will make theater in Mexico, a project of her production company that she paused in order to promote ROMA. “I have a great love for the theater, it is the origin of my training as an actress. It is the living energy of the here and now. “
